Throughout the last couple of weeks, I have learned more about Cuba and Brazil's history; Particularly relating to slavery concerning their cultures, and geographics. Though Cuba is located within the Caribbean and Brazil being in South America, these two countries, have similarities along with their differences. The commonalities corresponds within their history and today's culture.
Some Comparing & Contrasting:
The collapse of the Soviet Union caused a major economic consequence throughout Cuba in 1989. This corruption caused a major loss in income; approximately $6 billion annually. This economic struggle relates to the rhetoric of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, creating a correlation with how political and economic changes affect racial dynamics. I do wish that the details of the consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union were more elaborated on.
In both Cuba and New Orleans, individuals from different racial backgrounds faced complicated power and societal structure, while being in relationships. The video hints that historical context, societal rankings, and discrimination make relationships between people of different races challenging, Yet, it Doesn't provide specific details on why or how.
Chica da Silva's story in Brazil showed how race and gender intersect, just like the Signare in Senegal. Both stories reveal how women navigated through challenges, highlighting the commonality; and comparison of each experience from different cultures.
